Each year, Friends of Thetford Forest (FoTF) undertakes some archaeological research, focusing on historic documents and heritage sites. It works with the Forestry Commission and with Norfolk and Suffolk Historic Environment Services and they give guidance and help with training.
Previous projects have included the 2003 restoration of Mildenhall Warren Lodge (along with the guided walk), and the erection of the new roof on Mildenhall Warren Lodge in 2013 as well as surveys on various sites around the forest.
2015 saw the group make a number of visits to site in and around the Forest, with clearance work being done at Ickburgh Wwarren Lodge and the installation of intereptation boards.
In 2016, Friends will begin a new initiative – caring for a number of archaeological sites across the Forest, making sure they are not being damaged by encroaching vegetation and that they can be viewed safely.
