There are many aspects to Thetford Forest, all of which are still under threat from the ongoing Government spending review. Whilst the original plans for a complete sale of the Public Forest Estate have been put on hold, as a direct result of the countrywide campaign against such an idea, the Government appointed a 'Panel of Experts' to review all aspects of the Estate. However, no final decision as yet has been made on the future governance of the Public Forest Estate.
On January 31st 2013 the Government finally announced its official response to the Independent Panel on Forestry's (IPF) Final Report on the future of England's Woods and Forests. The Friends of Thetford Forest (FoTF) have issued a short response to the Government official response to the Independent Panel on Forestry's (IPF) Final Report on the future of England's Woods and Forests. You can view the FoTF response by clicking here.
FoTF firmly believes that the Forestry Commission is the best custodian of the UK Forests, and should not be subject to such severe resource cuts as to make it impossible for it to continue in this role. The following pages outline the reasons and the actions FoTF is taking to highlight this to the government.
