Below is the reply recieved from David Chappell, Lib Dem PPC (Bury St Edmunds), to the letter to the candidates in the constituencies in or around Thetford Forest Forest issued by the Friends of Thetford Forest (FoTF):
I have often walked in Thetford Forest and taken my son to Go Ape.
I am absolutely appalled by the inefficiency that I have seen locally with the Forestry Commission close to Bury St Edmunds and would willingly support a local community seeking to take greater control of Thetford Forest.
I cannot commit to supporting 22 million in funding but I do appreciate that well spent funds generate jobs and income and create income. The only issue I have with the amount is that I may not be in a position to take such a decision. I will, however support efforts to secure this amount if elected and it is demonstrated as being good value for money. I suspect the growing economy will make such choices easier!
So I will support a new Public Forest Management Organisation that is rooted in the community.
I will support but not commit to the recommended funding.
If elected there will be many urgent demands on Parliamentary time and I will have to make a judgement call at the time as to priorities.
